Hallelujah Chorus – Composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, Messiah is one of the most well known classical compositions to come from religious text. Derived with scriptural text from King James Bible, Hallelujah Chorus is the staple theme of Handel's famed oratorio.

The Grinch by Dr. Seuss is one of my favourite Christmas shows; especially the original animated version (1966 – the year I was born).  It’s a classic, still enjoyed today by kids of all ages!    As the Grinch and his reluctant, adorable, dog Max carry out the grumpy green fellow’s misguided scheme to rid the Who’s of all evidence of Christmas celebrations, he realizes what we all strive to embody at Christmas - that Christmas isn’t about ‘things’ but rather about enjoying life with the people around us!  One of the things I especially enjoy this time of year, is being part of the GCB Seasonal concert – this year “Christmas at the Movies”.  For me it marks the beginning of the Christmas season.  This year’s show is loaded with all the sing-a-long classics – you don’t want to miss it!  See you there…

Gremlins Suite – This 1984 cult classic was one of the earliest films to combine horror with comedy alongside Ghostbusters, which debuted a few weeks earlier the same year. The Gremlins Suite is arranged for concert band, while the original score was written for a string ensemble with wind accompaniment. Written by Jerry Goldsmith, the original film score is darker, while this arrangement is a medley of the main themes from the film.

Hear it on November 26, 3pm at E.L. Fox Auditorium (John F Ross), 21 Meyer Drive in Guelph. - tickets available online

Have yourself a merry little christmas

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – This Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane classic has seen its share of renditions since the original performance by Judy Garland in 1944. Garland's performance does not include the original lyrics, and Frank Sinatra's rendition in 1957 also has some of the lyrics changed. This song can be seen in classic films such as The Godfather (Al Martino), When Harry Met Sally (Bing Crosby) and Home Alone (Mel Tormé).

Hear our romantic rendition on November 26, 3pm at E.L. Fox Auditorium (John F Ross), 21 Meyer Drive in Guelph. - tickets available online

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer – This Christmas classic was written by Johnny Marks and debuted at No. 1 on the U.S charts a week before Christmas in 1949. The song is based off the Robert L. May book of the same name, released in 1939, which has seen numerous renditions of since the books release. Most notable among them is the 1964 stop-motion animation Christmas special. Feel free to sing along!

The version we will play on November 26 has a bit of a Cuban feel - great for warming up! Get tickets ahead online https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/guelph-concert-band-presents-christmas-at-the-movies-tickets-38480292591

Mele Kalikimaka – Written by Robert Alex Anderson in 1949, the title simply means 'Merry Christmas' in Hawaiian. This song was recorded by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in 1950 and is one of the earliest known renditions of the song. It's also part of the soundtrack of the 1989 Chevy Chase classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Hear it at our concert on November 26, 3 pm at E.L Fox Auditorium (John F Ross). newfoundland rhapsody

Picture
"In 1956 Howard Cable created Newfoundland Rhapsody, a collection of well loved folk songs from eastern Canada. This brilliant montage has been performed hundreds of times by band all over the world." - The Eighth Note

Cable composed and arranged the original theme for the Hockey Night in Canada television broadcast, The Saturday Game which opened the broadcast from 1952 until 1968. His arrangement of Dolores Claman's "The Hockey Theme", which replaced his own composition in 1968, is the standard version, has been called "Canada's Second National Anthem". His Royal Conservatory arrangement of "The Hockey Theme" for piano is one of the best selling pieces of sheet music in Canada.

"In all, he has composed and conducted over a thousand radio dramas and variety shows for CBC alone, dating back to the happy days when they were performed by a live studio orchestra. He was the Executive Director of on-site entertainment at Expo ’67. Howard continues to direct symphony orchestras, bands and choirs across Canada. Interspersed with anecdotes of his musical life, Howard put the TYWO musicians through their paces in their interpretation of his work originally entitled “Newfoundland Rhapsody”, which was expanded and reprinted by popular demand, re-emerging in the print music catalogues as “Banks of Newfoundland”. Explaining his gathering of the folk songs (those visits to the bars to hear the locals singing were all part of the research!) gave the musicians a first-hand account of the concept behind each dynamic; each musical event."

fall fair

Picture
Hannaford Brass Music Publishing has this to say on Godfrey Ridout and Fall Fair - as transcribed by Stephen Bulla.

"Essentially an eclectic, Ridout yet did not lack for individuality. His music, though intensely felt, is prevailingly sunny and affirmative; it eschews the ‘doom and gloom’ manner and self-conscious profundity of much 20th-century concert fare. Ridout liked fun in music and could not easily resist concluding a work with a ‘good tune,’ one of which can be heard throughout this transcription of FALL FAIR for brass band – originally an orchestral piece – by Stephen Bulla. Ridout saw no need to strive for ever-new styles, or for a progress through styles, or for the role of musical inventor; style for him was a means of communication, not the ‘message’ itself. In this aloofness from contemporary conformity, he can be perceived to be more original than many innovators and one of the determined communicators of his day."

hymn to the fallen

Picture
Hymn to the Fallen is from the soundtrack album for the 1998 Spielberg film Saving Private Ryan.

Composer John Williams produced the soundtrack, which was recorded at Symphony Hall by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

Soundtrack opener "Hymn to the Fallen" has received some radio play. As a band member, sometimes you find yourself humming your part in the car before you realize, "This isn't the melody... how do I know this piece?" That actually happened to me last week as a clip from my second page of this musical work was played on the radio program "This American Life", and I heard myself forecasting the big, quick intervals we play in the flute section, a swelling and heartfelt passage. But I digress...

Hymn to the Fallen, with its military drum and vocals, serves "as a memory to those who have fallen in combat. Spielberg chose to place "Hymn to the Fallen" on the closing credits because it will "stand the test of time and honor forever the fallen of this war and possibly all wars" and felt it showed Williams' "sensitivity and brilliance."The album was released on July 21, 1998." - Allmusic Media Guide.
