Enjoy music for the Festive Season as the Guelph Concert Band presents “A Royal Christmas” under the baton of Dr. Chris Cigolea. Celebrate Christmas music from traditional classics to modern twists. This will be a fun filled afternoon with delightful pieces from Charlie Brown, the Grinch, and the “Nightmare Before Christmas”.
The program opens with “A Festival Fanfare for Christmas”, a bellowing explosion of brass excellence with layers of recognizable Christmas tunes, followed by ecstatic runs through the woodwinds, culminating in grand festive harmony!
Get ready for the season with forever ear pleasers such as, “Christmas Festival” and “Sleigh Bells” by Leroy Anderson! Anderson, a U.S. native, was raised on the piano by his mother and then attended Harvard before being shipped off to war. That is where he found his inspiration for the ringing of bells and cracks of the whip we recognize in “Sleigh Bells” today.
We are also pleased to share “Brazilian Sleigh Bells” by the late Percy Faith. Originally from Toronto, this Bandleader and conductor orchestrated lush arrangements of Christmas and pop tunes, and therefore became known as the swing king of Christmas. Let this lighthearted Zamba dance through your head as it portrays festive images of dancing bells.
A special feature for this concert is “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Fisher Tull, a composer from Texas. The piece is a broody lament based on a 16th century setting of the Second Psalm by Thomas Tallis, an English composer of choral music. Listen to a stunning Alto saxophone solo before turning to the horns for the theme, which transforms into a blend of harmonies erupting from the brass.
The concert will take place at Three Willows United Church, 577 Willow Rd, Guelph at 3:00 pm on Nov 27. Tickets are $15, $10 seniors and students, and may be purchased via eventbrite, on our homepage guelphconcertband.ca from band members, or at the door.
