We spoke with Chris, GCB’s conductor and musical director, about the band’s upcoming concert on May 26…
Q: How were the pieces for this concert chosen?
Chris: We have an artistic committee that gets together in July to talk about the themes for the year’s concerts. I start thinking about the themes very early, and we all talk about it . . . Then we choose the pieces based on themes.
Q: What is your favourite piece from our upcoming concert’s repertoire, and why?
Chris: I really don’t have a favourite - I like them all!
Q: Why should people come out to the concert?
Chris: They should come because Guelph Concert Band is part of this community -it has been for over 150 years! We’ve chosen the repertoire to include classical favourites that people will know. These are well-known, appreciated pieces that show how versatile our band is. On top of our repertoire, it is going to be amazing, and I’m pretty sure everyone will be in awe of how wonderful the band will play.
We also have the guest artists, Bobby, and Roberto Carcasses. Bobby Carcasses is a Cuban legend. He’s in the Blues Hall of Fame, and his son is a really famous Cuban musician. Both of them are world-class musicians that you don’t get to hear everyday unless you, you know, spend a lot of resources [laughs]. So, this is a great opportunity for our city, to have these wonderful artists coming and play[ing] for the community for the . . . same price. It’s included -we sell two for one! They’ll hear the band and these artists, and it’ll be a wonderful afternoon for everyone.
